The Shadow of the Day (L’ombra del giorno)

Directed by Giuseppe Piccioni

(2022, Italian with English subtitles, 125 minutes)

Set in Italy in 1938, The Shadow of the Day follows restaurant owner Luciano (Riccardo Scamarcio), a wounded WWI veteran who has cut himself off from the world and his own emotions. When a mysterious young woman, Anna (Benedetta Porcaroli), arrives at his doorstep looking for a job, he begins to open himself up to the possibility of human connection. At the same time, the dangerous antisemitism and political realities of Europe are creeping into their daily lives, leading to a reckoning that will force Luciano to question everything he thinks he knows about the world and his own heart. Filmed in the picturesque town of Ascoli Piceno in central Italy, Giuseppe Piccioni’s beautifully mounted human drama is a gripping tale of love against odds.

Family (Familia)

Directed by Francesco Costabile

(2024, Italian with English subtitles, 124 minutes)

Set in Rome in the early 2000s, Francesco Costabile’s Familia follows 20-year-old Luigi (Francesco Di Leva), who lives with his mother and brother. Luigi joins an extremist group seeking belonging, but his father’s return after a decade of absence disrupts the fragile equilibrium of their lives. Barbara Ronchi delivers a gripping performance as Luigi’s mother, a woman torn between protecting her family and facing the ghosts of her past. This award-winning film explores the lasting scars of domestic violence through the lens of a fractured family trying to rebuild, offering a raw and unsettling look at the cyclical nature of abuse and the challenge of breaking free.

Family Matters (Sei Fratelli)

Directed by Simone Godano

(2024, Italian with English subtitles, 103 minutes)

Marco, Guido, Leo, Luisa, Gaelle, and Mattia have different mothers but share a father: Manfredi Alicante, a charismatic scoundrel, a businessman with no business acumen, a driving force. When he dies, they gather for the first time in the family home in Bordeaux, hoping to become a united family. However, each carries their own story and identity, making it difficult to turn back. With an all-star cast including Riccardo Scamarcio, Adriano Giannini, Gabriel Montesi, Valentina Bellè, Claire Romain, Mati Galey, Linda Caridi, Judith El Zein, Imma Villa, Antonella Ponziani, Camilla Barbieri, and Gioele Dix, this comedy-drama was nominated for an Italian Golden Globe.

The War of the Grandpas (La guerra dei nonni)

Directed by Gianluca Ansanelli

(2023, Italian with English subtitles, 96 minutes)

Gerri is a caring and attentive grandfather who lives with his daughter’s family, helping around the house and taking care of his beloved grandchildren. This idyllic family balance is disrupted when Grandpa Tom returns to Italy to spend time with his grandchildren after years living abroad. Exuberant and boisterous, Grandpa Tom is ready to break every rule established by Grandpa Gerri in order to fulfill the children’s wishes and win their love. The clash between Gerri and Tom creates heated competition, leading to a series of hilarious challenges between grandparents and plenty of plot twists certain to make you laugh.

Comandante

Directed by Edoardo De Angelis

(2023, Italian with English subtitles, 122 minutes)

Based on a remarkable true story, Comandante follows WWII Royal Navy Commander Salvatore Todaro. While navigating in the Atlantic in October 1940, he comes upon an armed merchant ship sailing with lights out. He shoots his cannons at the ship and sinks it. At that moment, Todaro makes a decision destined to go down in history: he saves the 26 shipwrecked Belgians who otherwise would have drowned in the middle of the ocean and disembarks them at the nearest safe harbor, disobeying orders from above. To make room for them on board his submarine, he is forced to navigate on the surface of the water for three days, visible to the enemy forces and endangering his life and that of his men.
