In the latest film from 87-year-old British auteur Ken Loach (Kes), the Old Oak is the last pub in a once-thriving mining village in northern England. When a group of Syrian refugees moves into town, a rift fueled by prejudices develops among the community and its newest inhabitants. An unexpected friendship between the pub’s proprietor and a young Syrian woman creates new possibilities for the divided village. The Old Oak is a deeply moving drama about loss, fear, and the difficulty of finding hope.
