Houston-based musicians, artists, and philosophers contemplate the human condition in modernity in a four-part, multi-disciplinary series commissioned by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Houston in partnership with Steinway & Sons of Houston and funded in-part by the Houston Arts Alliance. The Archetype of Modern Man, produced by pianist and writer Elizabeth Newkirk, features a philosophical narrative alongside a classical music concert. Each presentation will explore a theme: loneliness, self-reliance, Americanism, and nihilism.

The third program takes place on March 27th at 7:00 pm at the Steinway Selection Center at 401 Louisiana Street. Focusing on the American Archetype, Newkirk takes center stage in a presentation that weaves together American mythology and traits of the American persona with works for solo piano. Drawing from her essay and album, the Americanist, she will present works from interwar composers George Gershwin and William Grant Still, as well as a world premiere by American composer, Stephen Webb.
