Preservation Houston, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, was founded in 1978 by a small group of volunteers as Greater Houston Preservation Alliance. Preservation Houston offers a variety of educational, technical assistance and community outreach programs that promote the cultural, economic and social value of historic preservation and enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of Houston’s rich history and architectural heritage.

Public programs include monthly, docent-guided Architecture Walks of different historic neighborhoods and buildings, quarterly walking tours of historic Glenwood Cemetery and the History in Print author series and Preservation in Practice lecture series. Since 1979, Preservation Houston has presented the Good Brick Awards recognizing excellence in historic preservation and now presents the annual Good Brick Tour of selected award-winning historic properties.

Preservation Houston also provides technical assistance and advice to the owners of historic homes and buildings, neighborhood associations, architects, designers and the community at large regarding historic landmark and historic district designations along with information about the economic, aesthetic and environmental benefits of maintaining and re-using historic properties. These services are offered free-of-charge to the public.

With the advent of the Texas Historic Preservation Tax Credit, Preservation Houston is increasingly working with commercial developers and property owners seeking to use the substantial incentives for rehabilitating and repurposing historic buildings.

Preservation Houston’s membership includes individuals, businesses and organizations. The Pier & Beam next-generation preservationists group is extremely active in providing social, educational and community service opportunities for its members.
