Join Writespace programming director Jamie Portwood in an exploration of how ASL poetry, particularly ASL slam poetry, can expand our poetic horizons. In advance of their festival in April, Reel Poetry 2024 has generously made their curated panel discussion with four international ASL poets and translators available to us. We will use this fascinating panel discussion as well as other videos of ASL poets as mentor texts in order to jump start a discussion of what ASL poetry can teach us about structure, space, and poetic expression before taking advantage of the inspiration we receive from the videos to generate new writing ourselves.

This event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. This project is generously funded by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, and Mid-America Arts Alliance.
